Movies : In iPhone from Flixster

Film website Flixster launched a new version of its iPhone application "Movies" this week, highlighting how technology and the Web are bringing Hollywood directly to fans and bypassing traditional information outlets like newspapers.

The transition has wreaked havoc on the newspaper industry which has seen advertising pages plummet as movie studios shift their marketing efforts to the Web, but for social networking websites like Flixster, the change is boosting their users.

"Movies" allows users of Apple Inc's iPhone to read about films and stars, buy tickets, and write their own reviews to share with others who in turn influence word-of-mouth publicity, or "buzz," for movies. For the first time, we have a tool that goes directly to a consumer," said Jason E. Squire, a professor at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.

15 inch Commercial OLED TV from LG

South Korea's LG Electronics said on Sunday it would launch a 15-inch television set using organic display technology next month, the largest commercial model so far.

Active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) displays, which use self-glowing materials, have better picture quality, consume less power and are thinner than widely used liquid crystal displays (LCD) that need backlight units.

LG, the world's second-biggest TV brand, said in a statement that it would be unveiling a 15-inch AM-OLED TV at the IFA 2009 consumer electric show in Berlin in September.

Research firm DisplaySearch expects the market for OLED TV to reach 2.33 million units in 2013 compared with estimated 320,000 units in 2011, according to data provided by LG.

Chadrayaan - 1 : Its time up

All communication links with the only Indian satellite orbiting the Moon have been lost, India's space agency says.

Radio contact with the Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft was lost abruptly early on Saturday, said India's Bangalore-based Space Research Organization (Isro).

The unmanned craft was launched last October in what was billed as a two-year mission of exploration.

The launch was regarded as a major step for India as it seeks to keep pace with other space-faring nations in Asia.

Following its launch from the southern state of Andhra Pradesh, it was hoped the robotic probe would orbit the Moon, compile a 3-D atlas of the lunar surface and map the distribution of elements and minerals.

Mercedes-Benz : Hydrogen Car Bet

Battery electric cars are all the rage right now, with most of the major automakers promising to have one on the road within the next few years. But that doesn’t mean hydrogen is dead. To prove it, Mercedes-Benz will begin building hydrogen fuel cell cars this fall and offer them to customers next year.

The F-Cell is built on the company’s B-Class compact car platform. It has a 136-horsepower electric motor that produces 213 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes didn’t provide any performance specs but says the car is on par with a similar-size vehicle with a 2.0-liter gas engine. Top speed is 105 mph.

Mercedes was similarly stingy with details about the fuel cell, saying only that “gaseous hydrogen reacts with atmospheric oxygen at 700 bar.” The car is said to be able to start at temperatures as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius. It has a range of 385 kilometers (about 240 miles), but Mercedes didn’t say how much hydrogen it carries. There’s also a 1.4 kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery “to boost power” and store energy recovered from the regenerative braking system.

Don’t expect to see a lot of F-Cells on the road. Mercedes says the first run is limited to 200 cars and concedes the obvious point — these cars won’t catch on in big numbers until we’ve got a hydrogen fueling infrastructure. To that end, Mercedes says it is working with government agencies, energy companies and utilities in Germany and California to get that ball rolling.

China gets the iPhone Officially

With over 135 million users, China Unicom is one of the world's biggest mobile phone operators and for the same reason, the iPhone now gets a whole new untapped market at its disposal. All China bound iPhones will come crippled with Wi-Fi as required by the law in China. To make the phone affordable to the masses, China Unicom will also offer subsidies to users who wish to buy the device. However, no announcement regarding the level of the subsidy has been made so far.

Gmail gets Contact Chooser Option

Gmail has been around for more than five years now and it still keeps getting new or long deserved features. Till date, Gmail had been offering auto-complete or auto-suggest the contacts in the address book for sending mails or marking a copy. But now, Google has decided to tweak that feature a bit and introduced new Contact Chooser option in Gmail. One can still use the auto-complete or auto-suggest contact feature in the box for adding recipient addresses.
Gmail users can use Contact Chooser by clicking on the text "To:", "Cc", and "Bcc". The launched Contact Chooser widget will offer contact list with group selection and also a search box in case you want to search by keywords or letters. One can select all contacts from the group selection box and can also remove few contacts from the 'To:' box below it.

Augmented reality now on the iPhone: it's real, and it's secretly inside Yelp

The hot trend of 2009 has to be augmented reality, particularly with all the impressive Tech Demos and futuristic games in development across the world. On the iPhone in particular, several companies have promised Tweetering, search, and other navigation using layers of real-time data overlaid onto live video from the iPhone's camera. Imagine a heads-up display on reality itself, and that's what augmented reality is promising.

Apple has been on-board with these developments, promising that the upcoming OS3.1 will provide full compatibility for AR apps. But it turns out we don't need to wait after all. In addition to French and British A R map programs hitting the App store early , a much better and cooler solution has been lurking under our eyes the whole time.

Called "Monocle," it's an Easter egg within Yelp. As in, Yelp 3.0, the one that's currently available on the App Store. When I first read a tweet about it, I was disbelieving. But all you have to do is shake your phone three times like some fairy tale to trigger the Monocle button, which suddenly appears on the top of the screen. Launching it brings up honest-to-goodness overlaid restaurant and bar information that moves as you move, aided by the iPhone 3GS's built-in compass. It resembles the demos seen by the layar browser.

That compass is key for AR apps to work properly, because it senses direction. GPS alone won't cut it, which means you'd better have a 3GS to pull this off. Give it a try, though, and let us know if your 3G will work on it. And don't forget to update the Yelp app before shaking.

Will we use this? Maybe not so much, but we sure will enjoy showing it off to people.

Microsoft cuts Xbox 360 price by 100 dollars

Click Here to Get the xBox360 Prices and Dealers of Hyderabad
Microsoft announced Thursday it is slashing the price of its top-of-the-line Xbox 360 videogame console by 100 dollars, just days after Sony cut the price of its PlayStation 3.

The Redmond, Washington-based software giant said in a statement it would sell the Xbox 360 Elite console, which has a 120 gigabyte hard drive, for 299 dollars from Friday, the same price as the PS3.

Microsoft also said it was cutting the price of the Xbox 360 Pro by 50 dollars to 249 dollars and phasing out the model.

The price of the Xbox 360 Arcade remains unchanged at 199 dollars.

Sony last week lopped 100 dollars off the prices of PS3 consoles currently on the market to 299 dollars for models with 80 gigabyte hard drives and 399 dollars for those with 160 gigabyte hard drives.

The videogame industry has been hard hit by the economic slowdown and US videogame sales declined in July for the fifth straight month according to the NPD Group.

US sales of videogame hardware and software fell to just shy of 849 million dollars in July, a 29 percent drop from the 1.19 billion dollars in sales racked up in the same month last year, according to NPD.

Sales of videogame consoles and handheld devices for the month plunged 37 percent to about 281 million dollars compared with nearly 448 million dollars in July of 2008, NPD reported.

Sony launches Amazon challenger

Sony has launched a wireless e-reader which allows users to download electronic books on the go.

Analysts said Sony's Reader Daily Edition is a direct challenge to Amazon's best-selling Kindle device.

The $399 (£250) touch-screen device is able to store up to 1,000 novels and can download books over a high-speed mobile network.

It also has an application that can be used to "borrow" books from local libraries for 21 days.

"By going open, Sony helps compensate for its biggest weakness: its lacklustre eBookstore, which pales in comparison with Amazon.com," said Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst with Forrester Research in her blog.

Google to let site owners customize searches

Internet search leader Google Inc. is expanding an existing service to let businesses customize the search results that visitors see when they search for information within their own sites.

Instead of offering visitors to a particular website the same slice of search results they find by searching Google.com, the new Google Site Search Service lets website owners show previously untracked pages deep inside their sites.

The new Google service is hosted on Google's network of computers instead of requiring customers to install and maintain search equipment of their own. Google aims to improve the search quality of sites with rich content but cluttered ways of finding information lodged within the sites.

Site Search is the new name for Custom Search Business Edition, which Google introduced in late 2006.

It adds business integration features through a machine-readable computer programming interface, the option to turn off advertisements, a more tailored look-and-feel for searching the site and technical support via e-mail or phone.

Mangalore in Australia

Confused....then read this....
Did you know that there is another Mangalore in Victoria, Australia, which has a railway station and an airport?

This fact came to light during a workshop aimed at helping people to contribute and edit Wikipedia content on the Internet held at St. Aloysius College here on Friday. Participants came to know that there is another place called Mangalore when they were discussing the Wikipedia page on Mangalore, which is available in 25 languages including French, Suomi, Galego, Polski, and Svenska, besides many Indian languages.

A participant surprised everyone when he asked whether resource person G.N. Prasanth, a medical professional from Bangalore, was from “our own port city or the Australian township”.

Halo 3

Halo 3 redefined multiplayer gaming on Xbox live, it sold more copies on a single platform than most games sell on multiple platforms combined. The game was a huge hit and Microsoft is making the most of it by releasing this follow-up expansion called ODST. There aren't many details about the game out yet but we do know that you don't play as Master Chief and that it will further enhance your MP experience.

Heavy Rain (PS3)

Games to Look Forward to in 2009 (Part1)

Quantic Dream make some great games, they were the brilliant minds behind Omikron: Nomad Soul and Indigo Prophecy. Their latest project is called Heavy Rain and is due in the later part of the year on the PS3. The game is based on mature themes and will feature a very intense and dramatic storyline. Their last venture a.k.a Indigo Prophecy was very well received but the last part of the story was a little too abstract and led to criticism. David Cage (co-founder of Quantic Dream) has promised that this time around the game will feature a rich story and possibly no aliens. On a more serious note, the game does look brilliant and given the developers past record, this looks like a game that will break a few barriers in game design.

KadaSwamy Movie Review

Film Review: Kandaswamy
Director: Susi Ganesan
Cast: Vikram, Shriya Saran
Music: Devi Sri Prasad
Ratings: 3/5

Kandaswamy. It is the buzz word in every mouth for the past few months. There was immense hype and hoopla around the movie. Touted to be Tamil cinema's ambitious project, the end-product can be described as a marvel on screen, oozing with style and substance.

The duo of Vikram and Susi Ganeshan have come out with a project (though far from logic) that is laced with all commercial ingredients at right mix. They have lived up to the faith imposed on them by producer Kalaipuli S Thanu.

Sending a message within commercial parameters is no easy task for any filmmaker. But kudos to Susi Ganeshan for achieving the same. Coming out with an unpretentious entertainer, Susi has ensured that he plays to the strength of Vikram. An action extravaganza with technical finesse was lacking in Tamil cinema. But Kandaswamy has filled the void now. The computer graphics and the breathtaking stunt sequences has been captured well by cinematographer Ekambaram.
