Microsoft announced Thursday it is slashing the price of its top-of-the-line Xbox 360 videogame console by 100 dollars, just days after Sony cut the price of its PlayStation 3.

The Redmond, Washington-based software giant said in a statement it would sell the Xbox 360 Elite console, which has a 120 gigabyte hard drive, for 299 dollars from Friday, the same price as the PS3.

Microsoft also said it was cutting the price of the Xbox 360 Pro by 50 dollars to 249 dollars and phasing out the model.

The price of the Xbox 360 Arcade remains unchanged at 199 dollars.

Sony last week lopped 100 dollars off the prices of PS3 consoles currently on the market to 299 dollars for models with 80 gigabyte hard drives and 399 dollars for those with 160 gigabyte hard drives.

The videogame industry has been hard hit by the economic slowdown and US videogame sales declined in July for the fifth straight month according to the NPD Group.

US sales of videogame hardware and software fell to just shy of 849 million dollars in July, a 29 percent drop from the 1.19 billion dollars in sales racked up in the same month last year, according to NPD.

Sales of videogame consoles and handheld devices for the month plunged 37 percent to about 281 million dollars compared with nearly 448 million dollars in July of 2008, NPD reported.
